Sacramento has a new place for outdoor exercise, designed with the elderly in mind.

The city has opened a new fitness space at the Oak Park Community Center in Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The new outdoor fitness park has 11 exercise machines, including an elliptical trainer, two cardio steppers, and a place for curl-up.

AARP has worked with FitLot, a national non-profit organization, to build dozens of similar fitness parks nationwide. Sacramento Fitness Park is managed by the city’s Youth Park and Community Enhancement Department.

Free classes, led by certified fitness instructors, will be available later this fall, the city says.

The park is funded by an AARP grant that also includes three years of programming.
